He was square in all his dealings. Bridgewater Bulletin Bridgewater,NS December 16,1919 Historical Information: The Phinney business was established in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia in 1871 by N.H. Phinney. Originally the business consisted of selling organs, agricultural machinery, and sewing machines, but later, changed to a piano and phonograph business. The first branch was established in Bridgewater around 1888, later branches were opened in Windsor and Kentville. The company played an important role in the work of distributing musical instruments, phonographs and records throughout the Maritime Provinces. Following the death of Norman H. Phinney in 1919, the business was then taken over by Mr. H.W. Phinney, who incorporated the company under a Nova Scotia charter, and great expansion and development followed. W. L. Saunders was the manager in charge of the Bridgewater Branch and the business improved, noting that people have learned to have confidence in Phinney's stores, which are founded on the one price system, upon service, quality and modern business methods. Every employee seems to have loyalty to the company and has an eager desire to excel as a salesman providing the best possible service and satisfaction to the general public.
