  • Obituary: Digby Courier 1896 Dec.4 James H. Eaton We regret to chronicle this week the death of Mr. James H. Eaton who passed away Thursday evening , Nov. 26th.in his 56th. year, of pneumonia.Mr Eaton was a native of Bridgetown, Annapolis County and came to Freeport 27 years ago as a school teacher. He married a daughter of the late James Ring and after teaching a few years engaged in mercantile business which he followed until about five years ago , when owing to business depression and losses he was obligedto retire. The deceased was a man of marked mental ability and intellectuality . He held a Grade 'A' license which he obtained with honors at the Normal School in 1870.Since that date though his mind was occupied largely with his business, he had always kept up his studies and in the last year of his life was as familar with Greek , Latin and French as in his early days ,and always took pleasure in sitting down and reading works in these languages. A few weeks ago he he prepared an excellent paper on the church's obligations regarding Foreign missions, which he read at a missionary service. The article well deserves a place with the permenant literature on that subject. He was a peaceful citizen,an obliging neighbor and a sincere Christain. Rev. L.J. Tingley conducted the funeral services at the church Sunday morning and delivered an able and very impressive sermon from the words:-" But none of these things move me ,neither countI my life dear unto myself :so that I might finish my course with joy; Acts 20:24 which was listened to by a large congretation of friends that had gathered to pay this last token of respect to the deceased . Mr. Eaton leaves a widow and 3 young sons who have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their afflicition.
