  • Obituary: William was 83. He had lived on Pendleton Place, Naragansett, RI and was formerly of the Buttonwoods Beach section of Warwick. He passed away at home. For 58 years he was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Rogers) Ellis who died on March 8. He was born in Providence, RI. He was the son of the late William C. and Lillian J. (Squires) Ellis Sr. He had lived in Warwick, RI before moving to Narragansett, RI fifteen years ago. Bill graduated from the Moses Brown School and he went on to graduate from Monson Academy in 1942. He then attended the Allen Aeronautical School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and during his four-year tour of duty he received commendation from his commanding officer for outstanding performance in the Bourgainville Combat Area South Pacific. Bill began his career in funeral service as an apprentice at the Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home in Providence. He graduated from the Renouard School of Embalming in New York City and after receiving his funeral director's license in 1949 he established and opened the William C. Ellis Funeral Home on Greenwich Avenue in Warwick, RI. Five years later he relocated his funeral home to 2364 Post Road from where he and his wife Betty faithfully served all families who called upon them until his retirement in June of 1985. Bill was a past president of the Warwick Jaycees and a former vice president of the RI Jaycees. He was a former chairman of the City of Warwick's Council on Highway Safety and a member of the city's Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of the American Legion Airport Post. He was a member and former secretary/treasurer of the RI Funeral Director's Association and was a member and former officer and director of the Warwick Lions Club. He was a sixty-year mason who joined Overseas Lodge in 1947 and who became a member of King Solomon's Lodge 11 in 1952 that is now affiliated with Manchester Lodge 12. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Providence and of the RI Shriners. He was a member of the Sahib Shriners, Sarasota, FL and its Legion of Honor. He was a past Dad for East Greenwich Assembly of Rainbow Girls, a member of Providence Chapter Order of DeMolay and a 25-year member of Adah Chapter OES. He was a past president of the American Red Cross in Apponaug. He was a thirty-year member and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Warwick Rotary Club. He is survived by his three daughters, Cheryl A. Stearns and Karen E. Gregson both of Saunderstown and Deborah J. Stromberg of Coventry and four grandchildren. He is remembered by his friends and family for his wonderful sense of humor and being a kidder. He loved to give you a hard time and "pull your leg." He had a very soft side and a good heart. He was a good man, good provider, good Father and Husband. He was a very loving man and tried to do all he could to share that love in his lifetime. He will be forever remembered and missed. He was buried with full Military Honors.
