Notes

  • Obituary: Christian Messenger '96 Wednesday, 15 March 1855 '96 Page 85 '96 Death the enemy of man has been going on with his work of destruction in this locality. Among the number who have been called away, is our aged Sister, Mary, wife of Deacon Caleb Shaffner. Our departed sister was the daughter of Zechariah and Lois Phinney of Wilmot, Annapolis County. She was brought to the knowledge of the Faith as it is in Jesus, by the preaching of the Gospel by the late Rev. Edward Manning, (of fond and cherished memory) some 35 years ago. Her mind became first impressed by hearing him preach a sermon from Heb. 4, 12, "The word of God" &c. At that time she had a discovery of her lost and ruined state as a sinner, without hope, and without God in the world, and the justice of God in her condemnation. Under a sense of guilt she was led to pray for mercy, but with a strong impression that she should not obtain forgiveness. She laboured under this load of guilt for some time, till again she heard Bro. Manning preach from Jeremiah 8, 22. "The harvest is past, the summer is ended and we are not saved." At that time her troubles increased, and all hope disappeared, and when the meeting was dismissed, and the people were separating, she remained on her seat thinking her doom was eternally fixed. The Lord was pleased to reveal himself to her, as the one altogether lovely and the chief among ten thousand. The soul that had been in trouble was now rejoicing in God her saviour. She arose and testified what God the Lord had done for her. The countenance that had been sad and gloomy, indicative of the storm that was raging within, now became cheerful and happy. She attracted the attention of those who looked upon her, the change was so visible. She soon after gave a relation to the church, and wished to unite with the people of God, and having gladly received the word was baptized by that honoured servant of God, The Rev. T.H. Chipman, and united with the Baptist Church, of which she continued a worthy member until she was called to unite with the Church triumphant above. She was united in marriage with Deacon C. Shaffner in 1807, and moved to this place and became a member of the church at Nictaux. While she had health she always filled her place in the House of God. She desired to dwell there all the days of her life. Religion to her was the one thing needful, not only in times of revival but in seasons of trial and sorrow. For a number of years she had been confined to her house, but her attachment to the church remained strong. She would always enquire after the welfare of Zion. It was apparent to all who visited her that she was ripening for Heaven and glory. Her mind became much impaired in her last days as her bodily strength failed, but on the subject of religion she was at home, and to the last she could converse intelligibly on the love of Christ and the joys of heaven. On the 28th day of December, 1854, she was released from her suffering and pain, and all the ills of this life in the 73rd year of her age. On the last day of the year, all that was mortal of our beloved sister was committed to the dust (in the old Baptist Cemetery at Nictaux,) where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest, until the Archangel's trump shall sound to call her to the skies. A large concourse of people attended on the occasion. A sermon was preached from the words of old Simeon, Luke 2, 29. "Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word." May the Lord continue to bless our brother Shaffner and his children in their affliction, and may parents and children all meet in Heaven at last. '96 Communicated by W.G. Parker. Nictaux, Feb. 1855.
