Holley, Sr., of Grant Street, Shaftsbury-North Bennington, passed away Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, in Bennington at the age of 87. Doug was born May 23, 1925, in Eastleigh, Hampshire County, England, the third son of George and Minnie (Pink) Holley. He attended local schools and later attended Essex Technical College in London. As a boy, Doug enjoyed making home movies with his brothers Roy and Stanley, motorcycling (a lifelong passion) and camping in the family's caravan adventures in the south of England. As a young man, Doug joined the Royal Air Force, his childhood dream, and served in World War II as Flight Engineer from 1943 through 1945, then two additional years of service in India with the ATC. In 1949, Doug emigrated with friends John, Sam, and Alan Dalton to America. He settled in North Bennington where he met his future wife, Gladys Batease, and began a career as Apprentice Printer with the Polygraphic Press. Doug and Gladys married in 1950 and started a family. He continued with Polygraphic, later known as Garrison Corporation, advancing to the position of Master Lithographer until the printing business closed in 1983. For several years Doug was their Union's Secretary. Thereafter, Doug held positions as Lithographer in North Adams, Mass. and Albany, NY, until his retirement in early 1985. Doug held part-time positions at Crescent Manor as activities coordinator, and later at the McCullough Library in North Bennington, retiring for real in 2010 after 20 years service as Assistant Librarian. In private times, Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, motorcycles and racing, watching golf on TV, reading and was always engaging in political discussion. Doug is survived by a sister, Pamela, and her husband Donald Welch of Bishopstoke, Hants; sisters-in-law Betty Holley on the Isle of Wight, and Valerie Holley of Southampton, all in England; a son, Douglas Holley, Jr., and wife Jennifer of Shaftsbury; three daughters, Pamela and husband Robert Woodward of Montserrat, W.I., Susan and husband Vince McLean of North Bennington, and Patricia and husband Stuart Shulenburg of Leominster, Mass.; grandchildren, Jason Holley of Schenectady, NY, Christopher and T.J. Holley-Woodward, of Bennington, Ashley Holley of Shaftsbury, and Maxwell and Emma Shulenburg of Leominster, MA., as well as many nieces and nephews in England and America. Doug was predeceased by his brothers, Roy and Stanley, as well as his wife, Gladys, who passed away in 1987; also, his beloved cat, Bella. FUNERAL NOTICE: Calling hours will be at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. A memorial service will follow at 12:30 P.M.
