Shute, Exeter's "best loved citizen" died today in the Exeter Hospital after tw days illness. The 86-year old writer is famous for "Real Diary of a Real Boy." The son of George and Joanna Simplins Shute, he was born in Exeter, Nov. 17, 1856. Judge Justin Henry Shaw of Portsmouth expressed the thoughts of many of Judge Shute's friends this morning; "The death of Judge Shute has come as a shock to all of us. His life and books have been a joy to the world. His fame was well-deserved and his friendship and affectionate nature will always be cherish as a rich experience." Rockingham County Register of Deeds John W.A. Green in reviewing the life of Judge Shute commented that "he was always friendly in the 36 years he has been dropping into my office." He recalled that the judge was always a Republican in his politics and belonged to n club or organization. Amos Rudlett, clerk of the Rockingham county superior court, eulogized his friend as "A man who loved his fellowman, who was genial, sociable & a good entertainer and story teller. He was of the highest integrity and his word was as good as his bond. He had a multitude of friends." A graduate of Phillips Exeter academy, class of 1875, of Harvard in 1879, he was admitted to the bar in 1882 and appointed judge of the Exeter municipal court a year later. he remained on the bench for 43 years, retiring in 1927 at the age of 70. A talented musician, he belonged to the Exeter Brass band for more than 50 years, remaining active even in his late years. He took up writing when he was 48 and many of the episodes in his works were taken from his own experiences. Some of his books Include, "A Few Neighbors," "The Country Band," "Farming It," :The Country Lawyer, "Plupy" and "the Misadventures of Three Good, But Not Very Good Boys." Many of his characters were drawn after towns people almost all of whom were "treated in a spirit of humorous affection." Twenty books in all were published. He was married in 1885 to Miss Amelia Weeks who died 10 years later. They had two children, Nathalie, who has been housekeeper for him for two years, and Richard E. now a judge of probate. Judge Shute's second wife was Miss Ella Kent who died in February, 1941. He is survived by his daughter, son and two grandsons.
