Granville, All Saints Anglican Parish Register Obituary: We learn by a Halifax newspaper that Mr Jeremiah Calnek died a few days ago in the County of Guysborough, aged 90 years. Formerly he was a prominent resident of this town, and is still respectfully remembered by the senior members of the community. When quite a young man, he bought a tract of wilderness land on Wilmot mountains; and transformed it into a productive farm. About the year 1834-5, he was put in possession of a large sum of money by a wealthy German relation. He then left his mountain farm, and went into mercantile pursuit in this town. Meanwhile he built the large house in which Joseph Wheelock, Esquire, now resides. As a business man, he was not prosperous. His wife having died, he lived mostly in his declining years with his children. He was much respected by his contemporaries, most of whom passed away before him. He was the father of WA Calnek, a gentleman of very respectable literary taste, tendencies and ability, who started the first newspaper in this town, the Western News, and who has favored the reading world with quite a number of choice poems.
