  • Obituary: Grace Joan (Jack) Barlow and her twin sister Ruth were born on 22 March 1921 in Bremerton, WA, to Eugene C. and H. Grace (MacKechnie) Jack. She passed away peacefully on 13 March 2012 in Port Orchard, WA. In the nearly-91 years between those dates, she lived a full and fulfilling life, and she will be greatly missed by many. Grace graduated valedictorian from Bremerton High School in 1939 and cum laude from the University of Washington in March, 1943, with a Bachelor of Science in Bacteriology. Upon graduation, she and Ruthie immediately joined the Army to serve in the war; after training, Grace was sent to Papua New Guinea, where she worked as a cryptographer. Following the war, Grace worked as a medical technician in Seattle, where she met and married John Barlow in 1951. They moved to Longview, WA, and Grace continued to work in medical technology and bacteriology while raising their three children. They were members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, enjoyed playing bridge and dancing, and Grace led a Great Books group, her daughters' Girl Scout troops, and served a number of terms as president of the PTA. In 1979, both Grace and John retired to Lake Cushman, where they were active playing golf and volunteering for the fire department, and where Grace enjoyed her new hobby, quilting, with The Ladies of the Lake. Besides quilting, over the years Grace loved reading, music, gardening, camping, backpacking, and mushrooming. They also made many winter trips to Hawaii during their retirement. In 2000, Grace and John moved to Silverdale, then to Puyallup, and finally, to Gig Harbor in 2010, making many friends along the way. Grace was preceded in death by her husband John, her twin sister, Ruth (Jack) Anderson, and her brother, Walter Jack. She is survived by her sister Bernice (Jack) Thompson; her three children and their spouses: Terri and Robert Major, Laura Barlow and Dean Shutt, and John and Kerry Barlow; her three grandchildren and their spouses: Ian and Cheryl Major, Jessica and Alex Lawrence, and Philip and Beth Major; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Gabriel Major and Eowyn Lawrence; and many loving nieces and nephews. A service to honor Grace and celebrate her life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, May 19th at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton, with a potluck to follow. Donations in her name may be made to The Nature Conservancy.
