  • Obituary: PHINNEY, Ian E.A. of Chester Basin, passed away peacefully in the VG Site, QEII on November 3, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Middleton On October 22, 1937, a son of the late Roy and Gladys (MacDonald) Phinney. Ian attended Acadia University and UNB. As an accomplished draftsman, Ian worked with DND, Atlantic Bridge and the Halifax Municipality prior to his teaching career at Dartmouth Vocational School where he taught building technology and blueprint reading. Upon retirement he owned and operated Phinney's Frame Place which he continued to work at until he became terminally ill. Ian was a long-standing curler and member of several local curling clubs. A singer/songwriter with his music playing on several Canadian radio stations, his gift of music lives on. He was a member of several barbershop quartets where he enjoyed singing at weddings and local community events. He was an inventor, builder and visionary. Ian spent countless hours designing and creating and could always be found with his drafting pen in hand. He is survived by his daughters, Janice (Ken) Butler of Beaver Bank; Karen (Michael) Fisher, Halifax; Joanne (Larry) Roberge, Fall River; mother of his children, Doreen Furlong, with whom he remained close; brother, Richard; sister, Sheila Thompson; grandchildren, Megan (Dave) Pottle, Justin, Katelyn, Krista and Ashley; several nieces and nephews; estranged wife, Shirley and stepchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Audrey Goucher-Millett, Katherine Marshall, Jean Dumeah; brothers, Vernon and Beldon, The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at the 7 th Floor Palliative Care Unit at the VG Site, QEII, for their care and kindness they showed to Ian. Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date. Donations can be made to Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448.
