  • Obituary: Mr. Samuel Crawford died at his home at Elon College on the 4th day of July, 1900, in the 82nd year of his age. He was born in this county, then Orange, on Sept.' 21st, 1818. His remains were buried the day following in Providence burying ground, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. V. S. Long, his life-long friend and for many years his pastor. Mr. Crawford was twice married. His first wife was Mary Ann-Walker whom he married Dec. 2nd, 1843, and of this union there were born twelve children 9 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 7 sons and 1 daughter are now living: Mrs. Emma C. Cheek at Ore Hill, N. C., John, H. F. and W. C. in Tenn.; Samuel P., Isaac W., Thelbert L. in Texas; and Virginius W. in Graham. His second wife was Eliza A. Denny, widow of Dr. W. R.; Denny, whom he married Aug. 8, 1872, Mrs. Denny bore two children, Mrs. Jennie Gunter, of Sanford, William P., of Texas. For Mr. Crawford she bore two children, Dr. E. A. Crawford, of Burlington, and Mary,; of Elon College. Mr. Crawford leaves surviving him a widow, eight sons and two daughters. For many years Mr. Crawford made his home at the Crawford place now within the corporate limits of this town, and about nine years ago moved to Elon College. Deceased was for many years a Deacon in the Christian church. He practiced economy, and frugality and was scrupulously honest in his dealings with men, and had saved a comfortable estate. In his promptness and punctuality he set a worthy example. He lived a long life, engaged in the peaceful pursuit of telling [sic] the soil and at the end like a shock of ripened grain is garnered in his eternal home.
