  • Obituary: WALTHAM - Olive M. "Betty" (Beals) Hire, 96, of Waltham, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, at Chetwynd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Newton. She was the wife of Arthur C. Hire, who died May 29, 1995. She was born in Clarence, Nova Scotia, a daughter of the late Orin and Elizabeth (Slocumb) Beals, and was a resident of Waltham for more than 70 years. Mrs. Hire worked as an attendant nurse's aide at Fernald State School before raising her family. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church and its "Circle 3." She and her family spent summers in Liberty, Maine for many years. An avid cook, she enjoyed sewing and was a devout Bruins and Red Sox fan. Her favorite past-time was spending time on Friday nights, years ago, shopping on Moody Street with her best friend and sister, Alice. She leaves her sons, Frederick A. Hire and his wife, Dorothy, of Hudson, David R. Hire, and Kenneth E. Hire and his wife, Cynthia, all of Waltham; a sister, Ruthie Davis of Belfast, Maine; two half-sisters, Thelma Oulet of Hartford and Rita Balcomb of Nova Scotia; her grandchildren, Dean, Stephen, Jason, Donald, Jeremy and Andrew Hire; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Derek Hire; and nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Carl and Raymond Beals, Alice Eldridge, and a half-brother, Glenn Beals. A funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 18 at 11:30 a.m., at The First Baptist Church, 400 Lexington St. Burial will be in Mount Feake Cemetery, Waltham. A collation will follow at the church hall. A visiting hour will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m., at The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Rte. 20), Waltham, prior to the service.
