Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Hibbert and Edith (Rector) Pettis. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with RCEME. He was involved in the automotive industry as a mechanic for many years. He was a long serving member of the Parrsboro Volunteer Fire Department. He was a life member of Legion Branch No. 45, Parrsboro. He is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Crossman; daughters, Frances Taylor (Reid Fraser), Parrsboro; Mary Janke (Ron), Salmon Arm, B.C.; sons, Rod (Marilyn), Parrsboro; Gary (Bev), Debert; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister in infancy; brothers, Hilton, Lawrence, Claude, Harold, Robert.
