  • Obituary: TAYLOR, Gerald Donald - 50, Parrsboro, Cumberland Co., passed away quietly at home, on Saturday, June 23, 2001, after a long and courageous battle. Born in Parrsboro, he was a son of the late Carl and Elsie (Phinney) Taylor. Gerald worked at Emco Wheaton in Lakeshore, Ont., as a foreman and machinist, until he moved his family home to live in 1972. He helped with the construction of South Cumberland Memorial Hospital, where he worked for 18 years as a Maintenance Engineer, until having to retire due to poor health. Gerald was very active within his community, where he coached little league baseball for many years. He helped initiate Boy Scouts in Parrsboro due to a concern that there had not been Boy Scouts for many years and was proud to serve as scout master for more than 10 years. He was a dedicated volunteer fireman with the Parrsboro Volunteer Fire Department serving 22 years, assisting in the construction of the new fire hall, pursued training and as well, served some time as secretary and treasurer. Gerald also drove ambulance with Smith's Ambulance Service, Parrsboro. Gerald was always ready to offer a helping hand and his willingness to help will truly be missed. Gerald leaves behind his wife, the former Beverly McCully; daughters, Dawn Slocum and husband Raymond, Great Village; Kelly Cormier and husband Jerry, Five Islands; Richelle Taylor and companion Dave, Truro; son, Gerald "Harry" Taylor and companion Georgina, Amherst; granddaughters, Ashley, Karlee, Jordyn, Nicole; sisters, Jean Spencer and husband Dean, Parrsboro; Beatrice Durant, Parrsboro; brothers, Lawrence and his wife Violet, Cape Breton; Allan and wife Shane, Ralph and wife Loretta, Fred and wife Irene, Gary and wife Tammy, all of Parrsboro; Cleveland, West Brook. He was predeceased by brothers, Roland, Robert, Verland. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today in Smith's Funeral Home, Parrsboro. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday in St. George's Anglican Church, Parrsboro, Rev. Robert Richmond officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Fund, Access-A-Bus Fund of South Cumberland Community Care Centre, Parrsboro or Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada Maritime Region.
