Dad was born on June 14, 1935, and grew up in Tatamagouche, a place dear to his heart. In the winter, the family lived in the village of Tatamagouche and spent summers on the farm at Brule Shore. He loved to tell us how his grandfather Buckler would tie a lobster trap to the "big rock", and they would have lobster almost daily. The beach remained his happy place where he was known for enjoying oysters and razor clams.
Dad had a huge heart and a special way with people and helped whoever, whenever he could. He loved old cars and would recount all the cars he had the privilege to drive when he was at Nelson Motors. He loved to garden, loved his furry friends and watching old westerns.
Gerry was a phenomenal father and grandfather. He was a true baby whisperer and could calm any of his littles with a hug and a gentle sway. Dad was an avid storyteller, whether it was reading to his kids and grandchildren or tales about life at Nelson Motors and Nova Enterprises. He was quick with one-liners and always found a way to engage with those he met.
Dad was very proud to be a volunteer member with the Bible Hill Fire Brigade, joining in 1968, he was Fireman of the year in 1971 and Officer of the Year in 1978', becoming an Honorary Member in 1984. He was proud to the very end of the times he spent with the firefighters he worked alongside of and never left the house without his BHFB ball cap!
Dad loved music and loved to dance. He loved to tell us stories of the dances he would go to with Vonnie.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Cora, Francis, Rose, Carl and Bruce and granddaughter, Deanna Rose in infancy.
We would like to thank the nurses and doctors of Colchester East Hants Health Centre for the kindness and care they showed to both mom and dad in the Palliative Care Unit during their time there. A heartfelt thank you to all of the caregivers from VON as well. We appreciate the support you also extended to us as family.
Dad was a gentle soul with a huge heart, he practiced kindness and would want people to spend time with someone who needs support.
He left with us with the most precious gifts that anyone could give -wonderful memories. He will live forever in the hearts of his family.
Gerry and Vonnie will be laid to rest in Watson Cemetery at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA in mom and dad's honour.
