E. Surles, 91,one of the oldest, if not oldest resident of Callahan county. The Rev. Joe Mayes, pastor of Baird Baptist church and the Rev. G. W. Parks, Roscoe Baptist minister, officiated at the services and burial was made at Putnam, near the site where Mrs. Surles settled with her husband, the late John Surles, when they came to Texas 50 years ago. Mrs. Surles died at the home her daughter, Mrs. B. L. Russell of Baird, Thursday. She was ill only a short time and death came peacefully, preceded by little suffering. Born in Alabama, September 30, 1838, Miss M. E. Hill was married in that state to John Surles in 1857. The couple came to Callahan in 1880, settling near Putnam, the district now being known as the Atwell community. Married 65 Years Mr. Surles, a Confederate veteran, died a few years ago at the age of 88, alter the couple had passed their 65th milestone of married life. Although Mr. Surles received a wound from which he never recovered, as he followed the stars and bars of the Confederacy, neither he nor his widow ever accepted the pensions to which they were eligible. Mr. Surles was one of the first Callahan county citizens to establish a stock farm and one of the first to introduce Jersey cattle into the county. Surviving Mrs. Surles are two daughters, Mrs. Russell and Mrs. C. C. Andrews of Baird; a son, M. R. Surles of Dotham; 25 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchiidren, and one great-great-grandchild. She had been a church member since girlhood. Grandsons of Mrs. Surles were pallbearers. They are: B. F. Andrews and B. F. Russell, Baird; O.J.
