Notes

  • Obituary: The death occurred at her residence, No. 103 Spring Garden Road, Sunday, after a lengthy illness, borne with patience and fortitude, of Mrs. Elizabeth Bligh, widow of the late A.B. Bligh, and mother of the Mayor of Halifax. Mrs. Bligh was formerly Elizabeth A. Coleman, daughter of John R. and Rebecca Coleman, of Cornwallis, Kings County. John R. Coleman was a brother of William J. Coleman, the well-known furrier of this city. Of a family of nine children, Mrs. Bligh has left only one surviving sister, Mrs. Marshall, (widow,) of Aylesford, Kings Co. One sister, Miss Margaret Coleman, died when a young woman and two sisters, Mrs. Noyes, passed away in Boston where they had resided for many years. Her brothers, Thomas, William and John, lived in Cornwallis and passed away there. Mrs. Bligh's eldest brother, John Coleman, contested Kings Co. in the Conservative interest for the Federal House the first election after confederation. The ninth member of the family, Dr. James A. Coleman, was a well-known doctor of Granville Ferry. Mrs. Bligh married A.B. Bligh, merchant and shipbuilder, of Cornwallis, who was at that time doing business at Lakeville and Black Rock in Kings County, under the firm name of Burgess and Bligh. Mr. Burgess, the other member of the firm, being a cousin of Mrs. Bligh. A year after the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bligh the firm dissolved and Mr. Bligh, then thirty-two years of age, and Mr. Burgess opposed each other in contesting Kings County for the House of Assembly, Mr. Bligh on the Johnstone-Tupper side and Mr. Burgess on the Howe side. About fifty years ago Mr. Bligh removed to Halifax where he conducted a large grocery business, as many of the older residents will remember on Buckingham Street, where W.S. and H.H. Rogers, the auctioneers, now carry on business. Mr. Bligh died in 1888. The only children of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bligh were Frederick P., and Miss Margaret Bligh both of whom will have the sympathy of the community as well as of a large number of friends throughout the Province in their bereavement. The deceased was a lady of the old school, kindly and genial in all her relations, ever responsive to the appeals for charity or help in a good cause, and her lengthy illness and consequent suffering was the cause of sincere sorrow to those who knew her, and especially to those who knew her when she was in the prime of life and in the midst of activities. Interment will be at Billtown cemetery, and the funeral will be from Coldbrook Station (D.A.R.) on arrival of morning express from Halifax on Wednesday. Berwick Register Berwick,NS April 7,1915
