  • Obituary: 1925 - September 12, 2021 Elmer "Bill" Carter - Oxford/Springhill. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elmer "Bill" Carter at the age of 96. A Second World War veteran, Elmer had several vocations over the years including farmer, lumberman, welder, and Commissionaire. Prior to retirement, he was the welding foreman at Tidewater Construction. After retirement, he and his wife of 61 years (Hazel) enjoyed traveling to Florida, Arizona, and British Columbia. His hobbies included making axe handles and wooden spoons, knitting mittens and gloves, making mustard pickles, and solving cryptograms. He loved playing games and although he "claimed" that he did not care whether he won or lost, we all knew better. He had a great sense of humour and he loved to tease. He loved to hunt and fish and especially enjoyed his salmon fishing expeditions in British Columbia. He was a man of strong faith and he was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oxford for many years. He was also a charter member of the Wesleyan Church in Sackville, N.S. His faith and testimony was a strength to others as well as himself. He was predeceased by his wife Hazel, his sisters Olive Jackson and Jean Mattinson, his brothers Basil Carter and Delbert Carter, his half-brother Stuart Carter, his son David Carter, his grandson Myron Vansnick, and his infant grandson Russell Carter. He is survived by his daughters Sharon Carter (Ronnie) and Geraldine Vansnick (John), his daughter-in-law Diane Carter, his son Peter Carter (Merrilee Emslie), his granddaughters Roberta, Yvonne, Charlene, and Maura, and his grandsons Timothy, Gregory, Scott, and David. Thanks to everyone that loved and supported him over the years. Special thanks to Bev and Manson Gloade, Angie and Myles Whynot, the staff at High Crest Springhill, and the staff at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. No flowers please. Donations may be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Oxford, the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, or the charity of your choice. Visitation will be on September 16, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at MacDiarmid's Funeral Home and Crematorium, 5075 Main Street, Oxford. The funeral will be held on September 17, 2021 at 2 p.m. at the Oxford Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Jodi Getson officiating. The family requests that masks be worn at both events.
