  • Obituary: Lorne Fulton Carter March 11, 1936 - July 27, 2012 CARTER, Lorne Fulton 76 of Stewiacke passed away July 27, 2012, at home with his family by his side. Lorne was born on March 11, 1936 in Halifax; son of the late Elta Carter. The majority of Lorne's youth was spent in Cumberland County between Mansfield and Greenville Station; with many fond memories of working on the farm. On his 17th birthday, Lorne joined the RCN/CAF as a Naval Signalman and completed 20 years of loyal service before retiring in 1973 at the rank of CPO2. He served on many ships, with some of his proudest moments being the Yeoman of HMCS Assiniboine during the Honourable Roland Michener's Governor General Cruise and a member of the commissioning crews of HMCS Margaree and his final ship, HMCS Athabaskan. Following his military service, Lorne was elected as a Stewiacke town councillor for 3 years prior to dedicating his time to the fire department. Lorne spent 25 years in the volunteer fire service, including 20 years as the Chief of the Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department. His most memorable time as Fire Chief was when he was the driving force behind the construction of the Stewiacke Community Centre and Fire Hall and being the guiding hand in erasing the centre's operating deficit. He held many positions in the provincial fire service, such as President of the Chief Fire Officers of Nova Scotia for 2 years and served on many committees. His greatest love within the fire service was in the field of Fire Investigation. He served many years as Vice President of the Fire Investigation School held yearly at Acadia University. Apart from volunteering, he worked throughout the area as a self employed carpenter from 1973 until retirement. In his spare time he loved to garden and spent many happy and enjoyable hours on the farm of Eddy Tupper, now known as Wharf Road farm. He also enjoyed curling as a member of the Stewiacke Fire Department team. Lorne was the loving husband of Faye (Patriquin) for 54 years, and proud father of daughter Debbie (James) Sexsmith of Stewiacke and Blaine Carter (Darcy) of Enfield. Lorne was the proud grandfather of Michael, Bradley and Melanie Sexsmith; Emily and Conlan Carter; also great grandfather of Ben and Carter Sexsmith. He is also survived by a sister, Linda Stalter, Alabama. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger's Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Ettinger's Funeral Home on 31 July 2012, from 6 to 9 pm. This visitation will include a memorial fireman's service from 6 to 630 pm. The Funeral ceremony will be held at the Stewiacke Community Centre/Fire Hall on 01 Aug. 2012 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Lorne's memory to any of the following charities which were related to his life: The Lung Association, Canadian Cancer Society, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Association or The Canadian Naval Memorial Trust '96 HMCS Sackville. Sincere thanks to all the excellent support from the VON and palliative care workers, who were so vital in ensuring a positive and dignified care plan in his final weeks.
