He was made a sargeant at the close of the battle and served as a non-commissioned officer during the war. At its close, in 1783 he (with many others) came to Nova Scotia, sacrificing their patrimonial inheritance with bleeding hearts...and all for the loyalty they bore to their King and love for the British Constitution. That they bore an affection for their native land is evident as Gabriel settled near the top of the Cobequid range of hills which separates Cumberland from Colchester, as bearing the nearest resemblance to the land he had left, and name the place Westchester after his home in Westchester, New York. Died at Westchester, Cumberland Co. on Saturday 8th instant Gabriel Purdy, Esq., aged 87 years. Mr. Purdy was born at West Chester in the State of New York, 1754.
