Notes

  • Obituary: Veteran Court Officer Wilbert James Carter succumbed to a heart attack Tuesday of last week as he was about to return to his home in Greenport after a long day in Suffolk County Court. Mr Carter, a popular figure with judges, attorneys and others who had business in the court where he served as an attachee for eighteen years, collapsed and died in the Court Street parking lot in the rear of the county courthouse at Riverhead. Two fellow court officers, Winfield Raynor of East Moriches and J Frank Rogers of Patchogue, who walked with him to the lot where all three had their cars parked, had just bid him goodbye when he was stricken. They summoned Dr Jack L Cantor of Riverhead who pronounced him dead. The 71-year-old officer was chief engineer on private yachts before he entered the county service. For a time he made his home in Southold where he was in the employ of the late Dr Joseph H Marshall. He is survived by his wife Ella; a sister Mrs Robert Graves of Waltham, Mass; two brothers, Maxwell Carter of Concord Mass and Raymond Carter of Oakland, Calif; and a half-sister, Mrs Frank Bergen of West Mattituck. Funeral services took place last Friday from the Horton Funeral Parlors. Mr Carter was a member of the Peconic Lodge of Masons, Greenport and the rites of that order were conducted at the grave. At the resumption of County Court Wednesday, Judge Fred J Munder paid the following tribute to Mr Carter: "It is with profound regret that we announce the sudden passing last evening of one of our court officers who served in this court for many years. His ever gracious and pleasing personality will be sorely missed by all who knew him. To his widow and family I extend the deepest sympathy of this court." Judge Munder ordered court recessed in Mr Carter's memory at the close of the daily session Wednesday afternoon. The Long Island Traveller - Mattituck Watchman Feb 12,1953
