Notes

  • Obituary: Florence Elizabeth Burgess of Bible Hill, Nova Scotia passed away on July 18, 2019 after almost 103 years of life. She was the youngest daughter of William Hall Burgess and Minerva Jane (Whidden) Burgess of Bible Hill. She was predeceased by her brothers, Arleigh and Carl; sisters, Lillian (Burgess) Freeman, Margarita (Rita) (Burgess) Cox and Marion (Burgess) Nelson; nephews, Gregory Nelson, Douglas Freeman and Dennis Burgess and niece Marilyn (Cox) O'Neill. She is survived by nieces, Catherine Waller (Alberta), Anne Latham (Halifax), Sara Veysey (Sussex) and nephews, Carl Freeman (Florida), James Burgess (Halifax), John Burgess (Halifax) and Kelly Nelson (Halifax) as well as many grandnieces and nephews, great grandnieces and nephews and a 2nd great grandniece. Florrie enjoyed being in the St John's Anglican Church Choir for many years and was proud of her 30 years on the Board of the Colchester-East Hants Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association. An avid bridge player in her day, she also loved flowers and had beautiful gardens at her home. Florrie also loved her cats and dogs and always had a pet over the years to keep her company. Florrie, as she was known by her family, lived in Bible Hill much of her life until she moved to the Northwood in Halifax finally spending her last years at the Mira Long Term Care Center in Truro. She trained as a hairdresser in her youth but after a short career chose to come home and take care of her ailing mother, Minerva. The homestead in Bible Hill was home to many events and family reunions over the years with Florrie being the gracious hostess. Although Florrie had no children of her own, she took great joy in helping her siblings' children whenever she could and faithfully followed their careers and families as they grew older. The family extend a very special thanks to all the staff of the Mira for their great care of her for all these years. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held, no public visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro where online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
