  • Obituary: Donald Percy "Donnie" Locke, 1927-2014 Donald Percy "Donnie" Locke - 87, Brookfield, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Elk Court, Brookfield. Born March 10, 1927, in Brookfield, he was a son of the late Cecil and Irene (Pynn) Locke. He retired from Canadian National Railways in 1982; Donnie worked for 35 years as Station Agent and Telegraph Operator in Hopewell, Tusket, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Halifax and Truro. After he retired, Donnie enjoyed bee keeping and wood working. He was a devout Christian and member of Brookfield Baptist Church where, among other things, he had served on the Board of Deacons, Trustees, Finance, and was Treasurer for many years. Donnie taught Sunday school, was Sunday school Superintendent and was very active with Boy Scouts. He followed the Brookfield Elks sports teams and loved to attend the games and cheer them on. He was a member Brookfield Men's Club where he also served as treasurer for a number of years. He was a member of the Brookfield All Around the Circle Seniors Group. He bowled in the Brookfield League many years, and later enjoyed bowling in two Truro Senior's Leagues. Donnie loved to go hunting and fishing. In more recent years, while living in the senior's apartments in Brookfield, he enjoyed playing cards, dominoes and jig-saw puzzles with his many friends. He had a great sense of humor, loved people and life itself. Donnie was devoted to his wife, Verna (Matheson),for the 58 years they were married; he tenderly cared for her for the ten years she was confined to a wheelchair. Donnie is survived by, and was a wonderful father to, his daughters, Jane (Brian) Kenrick, Middle Stewiacke; Margaret Anne (Brad) Little, New Maryland, New Brunswick; sons, Rick (Wendy) and Stephen (Krista), Brookfield; a proud and loving grandfather to Julie (Clint), Brett, Elizabeth (Dean), Beckie (Mike), Emily (Joel), Charlene and Cody; great-grandfather to Kelsey, Abigail, Emma, Dustin and Liam. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth (Leon) Colburne, Truro; brothers, Rev. Frank (Hazel), Brookfield; Glen (Shirley), Bible Hill; Keith (Eldora), Stephenville, Newfoundland; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Edna Graham, Brookfield; Wilma Avila, California; Letha Mowatt, Bible Hill; brothers-in-law, John (Lynn), Hugh (Judy), Winston (Ruth), Gordon (Myrna), Vaughn (Donna) (all Matheson), Brookfield. Along with his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Reta (Raymond) Purdy, Marjorie (Glenn) Illsley; brother, Wayne; sister-in-law, Barbara Locke; brothers-in-law, Ken Matheson and Ed Graham. Special thanks to the staff at Elk Court for all the kindness and compassion you gave to our dear father, grandfather and brother during the past few months. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Brookfield Baptist Church, 35 Highway 289, Brookfield, Pastor Eric MacKinnon officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Donnie's memory may be made to Brookfield Baptist Church. A private family interment has taken place at Brookfield Westside Cemetery.
