  • Obituary: Following a period of ill health, the death occurred in the General hospital on Monday of George William Bowlby, 55 years of age, of 1604 Second-A street northwest. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife, six years ago. Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, he came to Calgary in 1911 from Detroit, Mich., and since that time has resided here. During his stay in the city he had been a member of the local police and fire departments, but for the past few years had been engaged in the garage business. Deceased had made a wide circle of friends in the city and his death will be deeply regretted as he was well liked and highly respected by all those with whom he made acquaintance. In the city he resided with his two sons on the North Hill. The Calgry Daily Herald, Tuesday, January 31, 1928 MANY ATTEND FUNERAL OF GEORGE W. BOWLBY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON ---------------- The funeral service for the late George W. Bowlby was conducted by Rev. George A. Dickson, of Knox United church, from Foster and Foster's undertaking establishment, on Wednesday afternoon, with many members of the city police force and the fire department present. Following the service, the remains were placed in the vault in the Union cemetery, pending interment. Three firemen and three policemen acted as pall-bearers. The many friends of the deceased present testified to the high esteem in which he was held. He came to Calgary in 1911, and for a time was with the fire department, and later was a policeman, but for the past few years was in the garage business. He had been in failing health since the death of his wife, six years ago. The late Mr. Bowlby is survived by eight children: Mrs. C.S. Coaker and Anna, of Chicago; Don, Charlie, Catherine, Reva, Mrs. R.J. Shaw, and Mrs. Austen Graham, all of this city, also two sisters, Mrs. Percy Coupland, in Florida, and Grace Bowlby, residing in St. Mary's, Ontario.
