Notes

  • Occupation: Truck Driver
  • Death: Accident - Struck by a train while driving across a railroad crossing
  • Obituary: Death on the highway struck in Clearwater County last Thursday for the first time this year, claiming the life Friday evening of LeRoy Walton, 33 years old, of Ebro, who was driving a truck across the Soo Line Railroad and failed to see an oncoming passenger train. Walton was operating a truck owned by "Bud" Nelson of Ebro, and working on the highway 92 reconditioning project. He was bound for the Manning Gravel Pit located on the north side of the railroad track, three miles east of Gonvick, and drove the truck onto the crossing directly in the path of the train, which hit the truck near the middle section and smashed the front portion completely. The driver was wedged between the cab and the partly open door, indicating that he had sensed his danger too late and was struck as he attempted to jump to safty. He was placed aboard the train and taken to Gonvick. Dr. R. D. Davis of Clearbrook was called from Clearbrook and gave first aid, assisted by County Nurse Pearl Peterson. He was later brought to the Bagley Hospital, where he died Friday evening, after having been wnconscious most of the time. Walton was known as a good driver and was believed to have had his attention focused on timing his run to avoid other loaded trucks coming out of the pit, and momentarily forgot the train schedule. He was born March 29, 1905 in Indiana, and came to the Ebro community about 20 years ago with his family. Married in Bagley in 1929, he leaves to mourn one son, Thomas. Most of his immediate family is dead, and it was not known if a couple of relatives lining on the west coast would be able to get to Bagley for the funeral, which was held Monday afternoon at the Congregational Church, with Rev. M. N. Knudson in charge of the service. Interment was made in the Bagley Cemetery. The Peterson Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
