Notes

  • Obituary: April 30th, 1932 - December 5th, 2021 Wendell had fond memories of his early years with his parents who worked at logging mills in the province before they moved to Truro and started Carter's Home Bakery. Wendell drove the delivery truck at a young age and excelled at cake decorating. Wendell met his bride of 68 years when she came from Sheet Harbour to Truro to work at the bakery. With Isabel at his side, Wendell built the pig barns, the beginning of his career as a pork producer under the name of Timbow Farm. The hog operation was often showcased by the NS Agriculture College where they made many field trips with students; Wendell always welcomed their visits. He also had industry members visit from the United States and as far away as Europe. Wendell was very active within the NS Pork Producers contributing to the selection of breeding stock, as a member of the shipping club and president of the Landrace Association. Wendell served on the board of directors for the Colchester Regional Hospital for eleven years and he was County Councillor for three terms. He was instrumental in the decision to build the municipal trunk-line sewer, an achievement of which he was very proud. Wendell loved to plant a garden every year because he enjoyed watching it grow. He often spoke at meal time about the fact that we were all eating the food that we grew and the meat that we raised. Wendell's love of the woods was apparent, as he spent many hours working the land, making trails, building bridges and harvesting pulp wood. If you ever heard Wendell and his cousin, Albert talking and reminiscing about their hunting excursions, it seemed it was more about their antics and comradery than the actual hunt and their laughter would fill the room. Ralph was also a good friend and neighbor who would always lend a hand. It wasn't necessary to keep track of the work they did for each other, as the barter system worked very well for them. Wendell was very much a people person, so when he "retired" from farming and not being one to sit still, he started raising chickens, then it was turkeys. He and Isabel would also make annual trips to the Annapolis Valley for a truck load of apples to sell, all of which he said was just to make a few extra bucks. It was apparent he got more pleasure interacting and engaging in conversation with folks than making a "few extra bucks." Wendell was a loving father, husband and grandfather. He worked hard to provide for his family and expected his four children to pitch in whenever possible. This was his way of teaching them valuable life lessons, lessons they grew to appreciate and better understand as the years passed. Wendell will be missed; there are so many memories that will be cherished and the love of his family is eternal. Wendell is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Isabel; children, Kirby (Bonnie), Wanda, Glen and Ardith; grandchildren, Amanda, Ian, Brian, Carter, David and Kiana and sister, Shirley Bennett. We deeply appreciate all of the care provided by the nursing staff and doctors within the NS health care system over the many years, especially, the nursing staff in the dialysis unit. Special thank you to Wendell's (Earth) Angel, Melanie. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wendell's memory may be made to Diabetes Canada and the Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choice.
