Born in Salem, Cumberland County, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Emma (Lowther) Carter. Helen was a seamstress. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by sons, Clayton (Katherine) and Leslie (Sharon) both of Truro; grandchildren, Charles, Tony, Scott, Deborah, Denise, Darlene; 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Clifton Smith; brothers, Russell, Elton, Wylie, Percy; sisters, Mabel, Blanche, Nita. Visitation will be 7-9 Tuesday and where funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at 2 pm, both in the Mattatall Funeral Home, Truro. Rev. Ebbie Snow will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Crossroads Cemetery, Valley. Family flowers only.
