Born and raised in Malagash, he was a son of the late Francis and Lillian Jean (Purdy) MacDonald. A graduate of Pugwash High, he went on to study Drafting at Cumberland Vocation-al. Bernie was lastly employed with HRM as a cement finisher and snow plow operator; but to all who knew him, he was a man of many and different talents. During his life he worked in construction, as an ironworker, a carpenter, a bartender, a chef, and superintendant. Not to mention his ongoing and never-ending interior design projects. He often joked that 'he could design, build and then decorate any house you ever wanted'. Bernie is survived by his partner, Steven Crossman; daughters, Alexandra and Emilee; siblings, Katherine (Clayton) Smith, Truro; John (Cheryl) MacDonald, Regina; Jean (David) Tingley, Wheatley River, P.E.I.; Loretta (Loran) Nickerson, Truro; Francine MacDonald, Centerville; Danny (Melanie) MacDonald, Rocky Mountain House, Alta.; Teresa MacDonald, Malagash; June (Dean) Jenkins, Cobourg, Ont.; four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Leonard, Lee; sisters, Karen Stevens, Sandra Tibbetts, Mary Teresa. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, where visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Memorial service 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel, Rev. Josephine Egan officiating. Reception to follow. Private family interment at a later date.
