Notes

  • Obituary: MacCallum, Shirley Elizabeth (Langille) - 66, Truro, passed away May 18, 2014 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Tatamagouche, July 8, 1947 she was the only daughter of Cora J. Langille and the late Eric Ivan Langille. Shirley grew up on the family dairy farm first started by her great grandfather which then passed on to her parents. Shirley was a very modest quiet person who loved gardening, especially her flower gardens which were second to none. In her younger years she attended 4 H and was awarded a trophy for excellence in judging. Shirley was also a good seamstress and was employed, before she was married, at J & M Murphy Ltd and later at Pittsburg Paints Ltd in Halifax. After her only son David was born Shirley remained at home to take care of him and look after the house. As David grew older she was again employed as a receptionist at Stardust Motel in Bedford. She lived with her husband Claude in Lower Sackville for over thirty years. In 2003 Shirley contracted breast cancer. Shirley endured a twelve hour operation followed by chemo and radiation and shed not one tear. She was nicknamed "Trooper" by her surgeon and husband. In 2005 she and her husband sold their house in Lower Sackville and proceeded to build a new home there where they resided for the next 5 years. Shirley loved it there and you could often see her and her cat named Bob walking along by the lake. She picked black berries and blueberries by the buckets, and had numerous flower gardens. In October of 2011 they sold their home and moved to Prince Street and later to Dufferin Street in Truro where more flower gardens were started and where she resided with Claude until the end. It is hard to understand why such a quiet lady, loved by all who knew her, would have her life taken away at such a young age. Her last years were spent in gardening or with her pet cat Bob who refused to leave her side until the very end. The only reason I can think of is that the "Man Upstairs" needed another gardener. She also taught us that you do not have to have a lot of money to enjoy life. She enjoyed God's gifts, including the birds flowers, trees, lakes, wild life, and household pets. She leaves behind her husband Claude, of over forty years, and one son David; mother, Cora; brother Kim (Annie); sisters-in-law, Julia, Doris, and Annie; brother-in-laws, Ray, Herbie, and Bill; special Aunt, Minetta, who has helped all through this; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. Her ashes will be laid to rest beside her father Eric. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m., all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society of Canada, the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society, the SPCA or to a charity of choice. Live webcasting of the service will begin at 1:58 p.m. (Atlantic Time) and is available along with on-line condolences at: http://www.ColchesterCommunity.com
