Notes

  • Obituary: Langill, Carolyn Emma "Carrie"(Langill) - 1918-2014 of Tatamagouche and formerly of Wallace, passed peacefully away November 3, 2014 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre with family by her side. She was born on Fox Harbour Point, the daughter of Israel and Kate Langill, the youngest of two daughters. She moved to Wallace at thirteen years of age where her parents farmed. Her mother passed away when Carrie was eighteen and her only sister, Violette, the next year. It was in Wallace where she met Owen, her husband of almost sixty years, and his extended family as well as the people who would become life long friends and neighbours. The lives of Carrie and Owen, together with daughter, Katherine, and son, Ross, centered around family, the Church, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, as well as all aspects of community. While our mother's life focused on family and the home, memories would not be complete without her work life outside the home as telephone operator or assistant postmaster for seventeen years. She regarded her work as a special gift and her co-workers became close friends. At retirement, she declared she could well continue working "if they had let me". Carrie enjoyed travel, her gardens, and especially life on the water whether it was on the "Coronation" in the forties, or sailing on the "Undaunted" and the "Kittiwake" recently. Carrie and Owen loved travel and they were blessed to be able to travel across Canada, from Newfoundland to Victoria; and throughout the U.S. as far as Hawaii. Planes, trains and automobiles were part of travel to explore new places, to camp with family and visit with Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star as far away as Hawaii. For almost twenty-five years. Carrie and Owen wintered with their daughter, Katherine, and family in both St. John's, Newfoundland, and Colby Village, Dartmouth. They considered this a time to explore new environments and make new friends. Carrie was a Life Member of the United Church Women; Cedar Chapter #3, and Atlantic Chapter #65 Order of the Eastern Star. Carrie was a Past Matron, O.E.S., Past Grand Representative and Past Grand Ruth. Both she and Owen visited extensively, were well known throughout the Maritimes, and Maine. Our mother was courageous, kind, generous, giving. Well into her nineties she loved gifting for family and friends. Her fine knit men's dress socks were special labours of love. This and her ongoing interest in the everyday affairs of all family members, including great grandchildren. This interest carried over into great enjoyment of her friends, new and old. She had a special gift in making new friends and was blessed in the love they extended to her. It would also be remiss in not mentioning her phenomenal memory which included birthdays of extended family, and members of her community. Many a day she came downstairs to announce that the weather sixty years ago had been stormy and someone had to be taken across the harbour on the ice to a hospital. For the past three years, Carried lived at Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche. She called the Lodge "home" and regarded the staff and residents as her extended family and appreciated the love and support she received from the staff. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine (Chester) McPherson; son, Ross (Anna); grandchildren, Lisa (Thomas) Hofmann and their son, Nicholas; Jamie (Jane) and son, Liam; Darria (Gerry) and daughter, Emma; Stephanie. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Owen, and sister, Violette. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Coulters' Funeral Home (902-657-3288) in Tatamagouche. Visitation will be held from noon until time of funeral at 2 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2014 in Sedgwick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Tatamagouche. Interment will be in Wallace Cemetery. Family flowers only by request. Memorial donations to Order of the Eastern Star, Cedar Atlantic Chapter, Sedgwick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Willow Lodge or a charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
