  • Obituary: Etta Jean Dewar \endash 89, Truro, formerly of Upper Brookside, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Rayburn and Helen (Langille) Staples. Etta was a member of the former Valley United Church, now Community United Church. She loved the outdoors and spending time in her flower and vegetable gardens. She took great comfort in being close to home, doing jigsaw puzzles, sewing, bicycling and walking. While known for her independent nature, Etta spent her life caring for others (in particular her husband, Carson) and putting their needs first. Etta is survived by her sons, Glenn (Susan), Saint Andrews, New Brunswick; Bruce (Tracey), Porters Lake; grandchildren, Philip, Lisa, Brock, Nicholas; several nieces and nephews; dear family friend, Roy Fisher and numerous close friends. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carson Ainslie Dewar; son, Randy; siblings, Rufus Staples in infancy, Leona (Burton) Pye, Murray Staples and Dexter Staples. Her sons and their families extend particular thanks to her nieces for their compassionate support and thoughtfulness throughout the years. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall \endash Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Etta's family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2025. Spring interment in Crossroads Cemetery, 110 Salmon River Road, Valley. If so desired, donations in Etta's memory to a charity of choice are welcomed.
