  • Obituary: Bernice Mildred MacLennan (January 20, 1922 - June 8, 2014) With sadness, we announce the death on June 8, 2014 of Bernice Mildred MacLennan, formerly of Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. Born in 1922, Mom lived most of her 92 years in Tatamagouche. She attended Mount Allison University for a year after which she returned to Tatamagouche and worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia for five years. During World War Two she lived in Summerside, PEI, and Kingston, Ontario, when her husband Arnold's Canadian Air Force postings took him there. They then moved to Kingston, Nova Scotia briefly before returning to Tatamagouche. In 1957 Mom became office manager of Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital where she worked for 30 years. Mom was an active community member, involved with the Home and School Association, the local drama club in the 1940s, and the Festival of the Arts during its years in Tatamagouche. As a member for all her life of Sharon United Church, she served on several committees including Ministry and Personnel, Property, Pastoral Care, Finance, UCW, and Trustees. Mom was a member of both the Colchester Housing Authority and the Willow Lodge Board for many years. Mom loved Tatamagouche, her many friends, travel with these friends, her house on Church Street, her cottage in Brule, playing bridge, knitting socks, shopping for that perfect outfit, and mostly spending time with people, perhaps with a glass of Jost wine. She was delighted to have her granddaughter Susan spend summers with her at the cottage and to see her enjoy the friendships and activities in Nova Scotia. Mom's smile when people told her she didn't look or act her years lit up the room. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and lined her kitchen counters in years past with baked bread, pies, cookies, and cakes, all made in one day. Lately, her cranberry muffins were a family favourite. During her visits to Burlington over the years, she became a part of our friends' lives as well, joining in all our activities. Mom moved to Burlington, Ontario, in October 2013 to be close to her family as her health became more fragile. She was well known at Tansley United Church and treasured there as much as she was at Sharon in Tatamagouche. She died on June 8th at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington after surgery for a fractured ankle. Mom's surviving family include daughter, Mary Ruth (Michael) Crabb; granddaughter Susan (Jay) Thompson, and great-grandchildren Autumn Fisher and Foster Michael Thompson, all of Burlington, Ontario. Mom delighted in spending time with Autumn. She was elated when told of Foster's birth on June 5th, but unfortunately died before she could see and hold him. Also survived by brother Boyd (Donna) Langille in Saint John, NB, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Ruth Langille, and her much loved parents Roy and Alice (Cassidy) Langille. Mom has been cremated. A Celebration of her Life took place in Burlington with many attending. Funeral will take place in Sharon United Church in Tatamagouche on July 2nd at 2 pm with Rev. Penny Nelson officiating. Reception following in the Church. Burial to follow at Lockerby Cemetery. Donations may be made to Sharon United Church, Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, or to a charity of your choice. I'll miss you always, Mom. You're safe now.
