Military Service: US Army Captain Obituary: Raymond C. Achterberg, 72, of Pensacola, Florida, died August 31, 2007 at his summer home in North Waterboro, Maine. Mr. Achterberg was a registered engineer in Wisconsin and worked for Gilman Engineering of Janesville, Wisconsin for 20 years. He was also employed by engineering firms in Long Island, NY and Dayton, Ohio before retiring to Florida. Ray was a graduate of Milwaukee School of Engineering and Marquette University. He also served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Ray enjoyed playing the classical guitar, listening to Dixieland Jazz and classical music. After retirement he spent summers in Maine where he fished and worked in his workshop and volunteering his time. He spent time reading, watching movies and pursuing his interest in history. He and Lesley took several cruises and recently did some traveling in their RV. In Pensacola, Ray was a member of the Gulf Coast Chorale, in which he and Lesley both sang, and the Jazz Society of Pensacola, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola where Ray was the chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for the last several years. He was predeceased by his parents. Alfred and Martha Achterberg and his former wife, Arlene all of Wisconsin. Raymond shared 22 years of marriage with his lovely wife, Lesley and is also survived by his son, Karl of Gordon, Wisconsin; his daughter Karen and her husband Hans Berg of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; Lesley's daughter, Wendy Hauman of Pensacola, FL; sons David Bolla of Pensacola, FL and Mark and his wife Grace Bolla of Malden, Massachusetts and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Pensacola, Florida.
