  • Obituary: Virginia Elizabeth Thomas Tiner, born March 4, 1941 in El Paso, TX, went home to the Lord on Friday, July 2, 2004 after an extended illness. Virginia began her education in El Paso, then received a bachelor's degree at Texas Woman's University in 1961. She later completed teacher certification at Southwest Texas, and began her teaching career in the late 1960's; after teaching in several school districts, she retired in 1987. Her last position was teaching English at New Braunfels Middle School. A beloved wife, mother, daughter, grandmother and sister, Virginia will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Bill G. Tiner of Cibolo; her mother, Gladys Vesey Thomas of San Marcos; her son, Leland Witherspoon of Seguin; daughter, Kathryn Mahoney of Kyle; grandchildren, Kourtnie Doherty of Austin and Coast Guard Seaman Russell Doherty of Kyle; sister, Karen Rayburn of New Braunfels; brother, Ted Thomas of Kingwood; and the three cats she adored, Parker, Spencer and Sweet Pea. She is preceded in death by her father, Romulus E. Thomas, and grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. F.C. Vesey. Virginia had a heart bigger than Texas; she loved well and was beloved of many. Visitation is scheduled at Pennington Funeral Home in San Marcos from 2 pm to 4 pm Sunday, July 4, 2004. Graveside Services will be held at 10 am, Monday, July 5, 2004, at the San Marcos City Cemetery Tabernacle, with Rev. Bob Maas officiating. Pallbearers will be David Rayburn, Dave Mahoney, Jon David Rayburn, Curtis Thomas, Dale Brown and Keith Stoddard. In her memory, memorials may be made to a local animal shelter.
