A lifelong resident of Hampton, he retired in 1982 as a supervisor of the Shop Fitters Department for Newport News Shipbuilding, where he worked for 40 years. He was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church. Buddy was preceded in death by his wife, Anne O. Topping. He is survived by his daughters, Frances Page and her husband, Phil of Newport News, and Mary Elizabeth Klein and her husband, Henry of Hampton; sons, John David Topping and his wife, Janice, and William Edward Topping, both of Hampton; sister, Dorothy Flynn of Hampton; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in downtown Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, at Parklawn Memorial Park, by the Rev. Cheryl Simmons.
