Notes

  • Obituary: Son of the late John G. and Vivian (Lindberg) Fenety, he was predeceased in 2001 by his wife Joyce Eileen (Nason). Jack was "Dad" to six children, Michael (Mary Ann), and Susan Doherty, of Fredericton, Jane Beyea (Don) of Saint John, Anne of Halifax, Krista Arsenault (Joseph) of Moncton, and Peter (Beverly) of Fredericton. He is also survived by a brother, Linden H., of Florida; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; as well as Sandra Hitchcock, long-time caregiver for both he and Joyce. He is predeceased by a brother, Gordon; and a sister, Irene (McCabe). In 1945, after five years in the Armed Forces, he joined the staff of CFNB, the Fredericton radio station that for many years was foremost in the Maritimes. In 1988, he retired, having served with distinction in roles that ranged from radio personality to Station Manager to Vice President / General Manager, ending as a Management Consultant for the station. As one of Canada's best known broadcasters, he was a trusted news voice for thousands of CFNB listeners across the Maritimes. He is perhaps best known locally as creator and host of the daily morning program, "Fact & Fancy" which was broadcast to homes and offices across New Brunswick for a total of 12,818 programs. "The Poetry Corner", the "Saturday morning prayer" and his visit with the weather office were some of the hallmarks of the program. As a proud New Brunswicker Jack served his community, his province and his country in many capacities, without moving away from his roots. Jack loved his family, his home, and his friends. He said he had two jobs he wanted to do, to be a broadcaster and to be a salmon conservationist. He gained pleasure and recognition in both areas, and accomplished much of what he set out to do. Over the years, Jack was elected to numerous regional and national committees that regulated and strengthened radio broadcasting in Canada. Fenety also sat on many prestigious, but demanding international agencies and commissions dedicated to Atlantic salmon conservation. As a result of his work, Jack received many commendations for his years of untiring work in broadcasting and conservation. Most notably, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1989 and was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2005. The award that he was perhaps most proud of came from the Miramichi Salmon Association when they established, in his name, a $10,000.00 scholarship for Atlantic salmon research, to be made available annually to a selected university graduate student conducting meaningful research on Atlantic salmon. In recognition of his work, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce awarded him the "Distinguished Citizen Award" in 1988. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award by Fredericton North Rotary Club and the Marysville Y's Men Award for "extraordinary community service contributing to improving the quality of life in the City of Fredericton". The New Brunswick Minister of Natural Resources also awarded him a special plaque, in recognition of his many years of service to Atlantic salmon conservation. In consideration of his varied legacies, Jack Fenety has been named a Hall of Famer many times over, with citations in the Canadian Fishing Hall of Fame, the Atlantic Salmon Hall of Fame, the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Broadcast Hall of Fame.
