  • Obituary: Kennetcook - Oct 11 - There are times when the chronicler of human events must pause for a moment to take notice of some special character who has passed from the sight of mortal eyes and moved on and into the sphere of the larger world of: invisible things. In the passing of Milton Addison O'Brien, M.D., of Noel, Hants County, there went out from this earth a most unusual man. Doctor O'Brien graduated from Dalhousie University about thirty years ago, and shortly afterwards settled in his home community and began the practice of his profession. During that period of nearly one third of a century he traversed an extremely wide extent of the county of his birth. In these days when it seems to many of us that the medical profession is becoming a highly commercialized art, this noble physician went into the homes of poor and rich alike, with but little thought of the pecuniary reward that might be his. The poor who were unable to pay but a portion of his fees, and sometimes non at all, received at his hands of kindly healing the same skilful care that the well to do and rich received. In the game of life he played no favorites. When winter's bitter and biting winds swept over these hills of ours, and drifts covered the roads, this man of iron will and kindly heart never thought the storm's challenge too great to be accepted. He would plow his way to the side of the suffering and dying, sometimes to remain many hours in the hope that the tide would turn which would bring some outgoing soul back to it's earthly home. Doctor O'Brien, dying at the early age of 53 did not leave a fortune in houses and bonds, but he left a heritage of memories fragrant with deeds or mercy. He made himself rich in the affections of his fellow men. While no monument such as marks the resting place of the world's warriors may be erected to his memory, there will be placed high on the altar of men's hearts a tablet of everlasting strength. His life and character were of such noble proportion that those who knew him cannot forget him. Dying suddenly on Monday evening of last week, while on his way to the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, for treatment, the news of his passing brought a shock of sorrow to the people of the whole countryside. He was buried in the family lot at Noel Thursday afternoon, the services being conducted by his minister, Rev. G.B. Gough, assisted by Revs. J.K. MacInnis of Maitland, W.C. Morrison of Great Village, and B.H. Penwarden of Kennetcook. Dr. Morrison gave memorial address which was a touching tribute to the man whom all knew and loved.
