  • Obituary: The family announces with great sorrow the passing of their beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Roderick Baker, at the age of 85 years on Sunday, November 15, 2015, surrounded by family. Born on June 15, 1930 in Timmins, Ontario, he was the son of the late Vaughn and Mabel (Dodge) Baker. Loving and devoted husband of Gisèle (née Rocheleau) for 62 years. Dedicated father of Gary (Mary) of Arntfield, PQ, Richard (Estelle) of Sudbury, ON, Michael of Montreal, PQ, Roderick Jr. (Lori) of Garson, ON, Anne-Marie (Noel Devost) of Hanmer, ON, and Robert (Nicole) of Ottawa, ON. He is survived by his sister Jean (Claire Morgan, deceased) of Peterborough, ON, and his brother Douglas (Hazel, deceased) of Calgary, AB, and predeceased by his brothers Malcom "Mac" (Trudy), Clair (Connie, deceased), and sister Beryl (Earl Hawkins, deceased). He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Katie, Liann, Robyn, Matthew, Thomas, Alexandre, Anna, and great-grandchild, Connor. Rod's roots ran deep in the Canada he honoured, loved and respected without reservation throughout his long and productive life, serving with the Royal Canadian Navy as a communications officer in Fort Chimo (Kuujjuaq) at the outset of the Cold War and being an honour guard at Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie-King's state funeral. Rod's easy jovial manner brought him many close and long-lived friendships, their ultimate trust in his organizational skills reflected in his years as district manager of Northern Canada Supply (now Guillevin International), presidency of the Noranda Curling Club, as well as the Noranda Kiwanis Club. His true essence was demonstrated in his love of and pride in his family, especially his appreciation of large family gatherings where laughter and kinship abounded. Respecting his final wishes, an intimate service with family will be held at the Timmins Cemetery, Timmins, ON on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Vale Hospice Sudbury, ON would be much appreciated.
