Geraldine was born in Cabin John and lived there all of her life. As a youngster she attended the new elementary school, Clara Barton Elementary. Her children, some 35 years later attended the same school. Geraldine was appointed as a Trustee there for ten years. She was a retired (1986) Goverment secretary, graduated from Strayers Business College and began her career before World War II at the Washington Navy Yard. After the war she transfered to the David Taylor Model Basin. She worked for the Navy for 18 years and transferred to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, where she worked for 14 years before retiring. When Geraldine and her husband Winthrop were married, her father built a home for them just two houses away from where she was born. She and Winthrop lived there for 50 years until his death in 2000. She chose to remain there until her death. As her father before her, Geraldine was opposed to progress and particularly commercialism. Geraldine and her husband served on the Executive Committee of the Cabin John Citizen's Association working diligently for many years opposing re-zoning requests from all types of developers. She was a long time elder of the historic Hermon Presbyterian Church on Persimmon Tree Road. She was very proud of her family role in the history of the church. Her paternal great grandmother was a charter member, her grandmother and granddad were married in the church, her dad Eugene Redden and mother Isabelle were married in the church. Geraldine was baptized there as was her daughter and son and later her grandson. Six generations! She was elated when Hermon church was selected for the historical register of Maryland. Geraldine was a 50-year member in the Order of the Eastern Star, Kensington chapter #39 in Kensington, Maryland. Daughter Karen Shaw Howe and son Stephen Gregory Shaw, as well as grandchildren Allison Howe, David Shaw and Lisa Howe survive her.
