Notes

  • Obituary: RDON DIMOCK MEETS DEATH IN AUTO ACCIDENT Auto Containing A. V. Dimock And Two Sons Hit By B. & M. Engine At Oak Street Crossing. Gordon Dimock was instantly killed and his father and brother seriously injured last Saturday morning when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by a switching engine of the Boston & Maine R. R. at the Oak street crossing. Rev. Arthur Dimock, formerly pastor of the Baptist church in this town and now a military chaplain at Camp Devens, was coming to this town in his car with his two boys to arrange with the principal of the schools for a transfer so that he could send his boys to Philips academy, at Exeter, N.H. When they got near the crossing there was no train in sight, but the front of the automobile had barely crossed the first rail when it was struck by the engine so violently that Mr. Dimock and his two sons, Gordon and Ronald were thrown high into the air and fell at a distance from the crossing. Gordon Dimock was found to be dead when help arrrived and the other two victims were taken to the Ross hospital. Mr. Dimock's injuries consist of a compound fracture of the left leg, several bruises on the head and a severe wound to his left side. His son Ronald was more fortunate and escaped with a bruised back and a broken leg. Mr. Dimock says that he never heard any whistle or bell and that the only noise they heard was when the engine was only a few feet from them. He also says that the Oak street crossing is one of the worse he has ever seen, and that if God only allows him to live long enough he will see this affair through and see that the railroad is brought to account for neglecting to provide for the safety of the public who use the Oak St. crossing. The body of Gordon Dimock was brought to the Ross hospital to await burial, and large number of local and out-of-town-people went to view the remains The funeral services were in the Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon Rev. Irad B. Hardy officiating, assisted by Rev. H. S. Hitchcock and Rev. George F. Pratt. The Junior class of the Sanford high school, of which the deceased formerly was a member, turned out in a body to attend the funeral. Burial took place in Oakdale cemetery.
