Born in Watertown, NY the son of the late Joseph Franklin McAllaster and Virginia Sprague McAllaster, he was proud of his upbringing in Gouverneur, NY. , in honor of which he established numerous scholarships for North Country students. He had been a Fairfield resident since 1962, and prior to that, lived in Westport. Mr. MacAllaster attended Dartmouth College and St. Lawrence University and later graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was the recipient of the History and Current Events prize. He served for four years in the Navy and then began his successful career in investment banking. He worked for Pitfield, Mackay & Ross, Ltd., then later purchased the U.S. operations of the firm and reorganized it under the name MacAllaster Pitfield Mackay Inc. in 1984. Mr. MacAllaster was renowned as one of the original members of the Barron's Investment Roundtable since 1974. He was a Trustee and Treasurer for St. Lawrence University from 1977 to 1999 and in 2011 received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in recognition for his devotion, philanthropy, and dedication to the University. Mr. MacAllaster was a longstanding Director for the Clark Foundation in New York, a Trustee for the City Mid-Day Club, Treasurer for the Southport Area Association, and was a Board member and Treasurer for the Unquowa School. He was a member of the Country Club of Fairfield and the Down Town Association. Survivors in addition to his wife Barbara include two children, Sara L. MacAllaster of Southport and David S. MacAllaster of New York City; a much beloved granddaughter, Alexandra MacAllaster Brooks of Southport; a sister, Jean Baker Chapman of Falmouth, ME. He was predeceased by a son, Archie Freeman MacAllaster, III (Sandy) and a brother, Joseph E. McAllaster. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Southport Congregational Church, 524 Pequot Ave., Southport, CT. Private interment with military honors will be held in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
