  • Obituary: Doris Cecelia Karnolt, 89, of Mystic, wife of Charles Joseph Karnolt, died early Thursday morning, March 8, 2007 at Mystic Manor Nursing Center where she had been a patient for a short while. She was born in Manhattan, NY on August 8, 1917, the daughter of Albert Lloyd and Mabel Cecelia (Weatherby) Rand. After graduating from high school she soon married the love of her life, Charlie Karnolt on January 26, 1941 in Yorktown Heights, NY. They eventually moved to Connecticut where both she and Charlie took jobs working for Pratt & Whitney Corporation in the Hartford area. Doris' career there spanned 23 years as the Secretary to Dr. Leonard, the head of the Medical Department, she retired from there on January 1, 1980. Once Charlie retired shortly thereafter, they began to travel. Charlie was once sent to Cairo, Egypt for six months on assignment and she joined him there for some of that time. They explored the countryside, visiting such notable places as the Valley of the Kings, Taj Mahal and also on to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, the Holy City and many other wonderful destinations. In their retirement they traveled to many places such as Russia, and also much of Europe. Doris loved to journal and she often documented her travels in this way, leaving a legacy of her writings for her family and generations to come. At one time, with her help, one of her grandchildren used some of her writings about growing up in New York City for a writing assignment. Doris loved to read. Knitting was a great love of hers also, and she loved the challenge of recreating complex designs. She was also a gifted seamstress making many of her own clothes throughout the years. She loved caring for her home and gardening but her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her the most happiness. In addition to her devoted and caring husband of 66 years, Charlie, she is survived by their 5 children and their spouses: Charles Lloyd and Nancy Karnolt of Goshen, CT, Dianne Barbara & William Casper of Malvern, PA, William Rand & Amy Karnolt of Powhaton, VA, Alan Edward & Catherine Karnolt of East Hampton, CT and Joel Kenneth and Marie Karnolt of Manchester, CT, 15 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by two Sisters-in-Law; Janet Rand of Jupiter, FL and Frances Cully of Guilford, CT. She was predeceased by two infant children; Karen Elizabeth and Kathy Ann, and also three brothers and one sister. A Memorial Service will take place at the First United Methodist Church of Mystic on Saturday, March 17th at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests memorial contributions may be considered for the Alzheimer's Association, South Central CT Chapter, 2911 Dixwell Avenue, Suite #104, Hamden, CT 06518.
