Notes

  • Obituary: Beeswanger (Matthews), Helena "Melba" '96 95, of Debert. We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved aunt, H. Melba Beeswanger of Debert Court on Saturday, March 20, 2021. Born in Debert, she was a daughter of the late Amblish and Blanche (Waddell) Matthews. Melba spent her early working years in Truro at Scotia Bank. After marrying, she and her husband, Wendell Beeswanger relocated to rural Schenectady, New York. Melba worked as a secretary in a large senior's complex for many years and thoroughly enjoyed the staff and patrons. She was also a bookkeeper for her husband's car and body work shop. In the 1970s, Melba relocated back to Debert to help care for her ailing mother and siblings. She worked with the Colchester County School Board until her retirement. Melba was drawn to the Lord at an early age and stayed very true to her faith and her church all her adult life. She was a lifetime member of Debert Baptist Church. She is survived by nieces, Lynn (Beeswanger) Strong, Belmont; Myrtus Matthews, North Carolina; Lorian (Matthews) Randall, Truro; Lynn (Matthews) MacLachlan, Truro; several cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews; adopted grandchildren, Riley and Kayla Totten. Melba was predeceased by all ten siblings, Leroy, Harold, Madora, Kenneth, John, James, Percy, Laurie, Clarence and Grant; niece, Blanche (Matthews) Steeves. Melba is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Although Melba never had children of her own, she was well known in her community as 'the go to person' after school when you were in need of cookies and milk or simply needed a friendly ear. Melba had a great love of people in general and her smiling face will not be forgotten by those who knew and loved her. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall '96 Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro where a funeral service will be held 2 pm on Thursday, March 25, 2021, Pastor Hudson Trenholm officiating.
