  • Obituary: MacKenzie, Theda Mae (Carter), 93, of Truro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Cedarstone Enhanced Care Truro. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Sadie (Logan) Carter. Theda graduated from the Provincial Normal College and taught school in Martin's Point for 3 years and was a substitute teacher in various places. She was a very hard worker, working mostly 2 jobs at a time to help raise her family, working in places such as Brookfield Creamery, Ryan's IGA, Truro Electric Commission which later became Nova Scotia Power, where she retired from. She also kept Normal College Students and miners from Cape Breton for many years. She was a Charter Member of the Zonta Club of Truro. A dedicated bowler for Big Brothers Big Sisters from whom she received a plaque for her dedicated service. She was also a life member of the Liberal Women's Association. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Edward) Hatfield, Great Village; sons, Gordon (Cheryl) MacKenzie, NB; Norman (Norma) MacKenzie, Truro; sisters, Betty Ashe and Shirley (Vernon) Geddes, Truro; Mum's grandchildren, Darren, Stacey, Pamela, Karla, Scott, Heather, Derek, Kerry, Tracy, Jennifer and Michael will miss her gearly and also several great grandchildren; Mum is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Burt MacKenzie; brothers, Jack, Roy, Howard, Logan, Gordon, Bob and Eugene; sisters, Inez, Audrey, Eileen, Greta, Carol and Ada. Visitation will be held 1:30 to 3:30pm followed by funeral service at 3;30pm, Saturday January 8, all in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro, with The Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters Truro or to a charity of your choice.
