  • Obituary: Our beloved Karen Saunders died peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 in the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville. She was born on February 26, 1960 in Berwick, Nova Scotia. Karen graduated from Cornwallis District High School and from Kingstec with a diploma in Business. Karen was employed with Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital from the early 1980's until the early 1990's and was highly regarded by patients and staff alike. She later was employed with Dr. Ralph Burnett and the Acadia Box Office. Outdoor activities were a major part of Karen's life. She was an avid biker, and she enjoyed winter sports such as snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. In later years she enjoyed long walks with friends. She was an excellent seamstress and loved her needlework. Gardening was also an important past-time for Karen. Karen is survived by her two children whom she dearly loved and was so proud of, Joseph Pulsifer (Aimee and daughter, Mackenzie), Blomidon and Nora Pulsifer, Dartmouth. Also surviving are parents, Reg and Ellen Saunders, Centreville; brother, Stephen Saunders (Janet), Weston; sister, Valerie Lohnes (George), Kentville and brother, Derek Saunders (Nicole), Centreville. Surviving as well are nephews and nieces, Vicki, Anthony, Adrienne and Caleb along with a wide extended family. Karen was predeceased by her niece, Brynn; paternal grandparents, Frank and Adelia Saunders and maternal grandparents, Frank and Ellen Kenrick. Friends were a very vital part of Karen's life. She considered herself fortunate indeed in the supportive friendships she enjoyed. The family is grateful for the loving support that has been so freely offered by friends and neighbours along this difficult journey. Karen's family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation and deep gratitude for the compassionate and professional care provided to Karen by the VRH ICU staff lead by Dr. Wightman and Dr. Gordon, and in Palliative Care by the staff of Medical A along with Dr. Wightman and Dr. Birch. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2012 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A memorial service, preceded by a private family interment, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Centerville United Baptist Church, Reverend Chester MacPhail and Reverend Marc Potvin officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Donations in Karen's memory may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Nova Scotia Division. Family flowers only, by request. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
