  • Obituary: Frederick W. Clarke - 79, of Coldbrook, formerly of Berwick, passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Fred was born in Welsford, Nova Scotia the second son of Vernon and Dorris Clarke. After schooling in Welsford and Berwick, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1948, and served his country for five years. After working for Fairy Aviation Corp. for two years, he joined Larsen Packers Ltd. becoming plant superintendent for 28 years. In 1955 he married Margaret Anna Larsen and had four sons. Greg and wife Dorothy reside in Dallas, TX; Chris and wife Jean reside in Sackville, NS; Mark and wife Jennifer reside in Calgary, AB and David and his wife Brenda reside in Yarmouth, NS. Fred and Margaret also have 11 grandchildren. Sean, Robert (Melinda), Ryan (Margaret), Amanda (Matthew), Jennifer, Katherine, Jamie, Scott (Kelsey), Meghan, Jenna, and Sutton. A brother, Robert (Gaetane) Ottawa. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers, Franklyn and Donald; a brother, in infancy and a grandson, Matthew. With a family of boys, Fred soon became involved in minor sports, coaching minor hockey and baseball as well as an involvement in the Scouting movement as an Assistant Scout Master. He was a volunteer firefighter serving as Captain of the Ladder Company. He also served 10 years on Berwick Town Council. During this period he was Chairman of the Recreation, Fire and Police Commissions and became Deputy Mayor for one term. The family belongs to the United Church of Canada, in Berwick, where Fred served as a Trustee and the Board of Stewards. They later transferred to the United Church in New Minas. In 1958 Fred was initiated into the Masonic Order at Valley Lodge #90, Berwick where he served as Master in 1966. In 1990-91 he served as Grand Master of Masons in Nova Scotia. He received the 50-year Jewel, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Erasmus James Phillips Medallion (Nova Scotia) and Christopher Chamlin Medal (Rhode Island). He was a honourary member of St. Georges Lodge #20, Wolfville and was also a honourary member of the Grand Lodges of Wyoming, Nevada and Minnesota. In 1991, he served as Chairman of the Canadian Grand Masters Conference. He joined Royal Arch Masons in 1966 serving as High Priest in 1987. He has served other branches of Royal Arch to this date. In 2002-03 he served as Most Excellent Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons. In 1990 he received the honour of Thrice Illustrious Master of Adoniram Council #10, Royal and Select Masters and received all the privileges of a Cryptic Rite Mason. Having served as Master of the Valley Lodge #90, High Priest of Cornwallis Chapter #26 Royal Arch Masons, Mt. Zion Preceptory #73 Knights Templar, and Adoniram Council #10 Royal and Select Masters, he was nominated for and has recently received the Order of the Purple Cross at a special ceremony at his hospital bedside. In 2000, Fred presided as Sovereign of the Rupert H. MacNeil Conclave #30. In 1990, he joined the Scottish Rite and has attained a 32nd Degree, and was a member of the Royal Order of Scotland. He became a member of the Philae Shriners, and was currently serving as an Ambassador at Large. Fred was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star in 1961, at Mayflower Chapter #2, Kingston and became a Charter member of Laurel Chapter #67, Berwick, in 1963. He served both Chapters as Worthy Patron. He was Grand Representative of Alabama from 1984-85 and in 1985/86 he was elected Grand Sentinel, Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. He became Worthy Grand Patron in 1987, in Dartmouth, NS, serving with Sister Barbara Bowser, Worthy Grand Matron at the 1988 "Mountains of Friendship Session". He was currently serving on the Benevolent Committee within the jurisdiction of NS and PEI. In Memphis, TN, 1991, he was appointed as General Grand Chapter Committee Member on Fraternal Relations. In 1994 he was elected Right Worthy Grand Trustee, General Grand Chapter, serving for a full 9-year term. In Portland, OR, 2003, he was elected as Right Worthy Grand Sentinel and served in the position until 2006. In Minneapolis, MN, 2006 he was elected as Right Worthy Associate Grand Patron, and served in the position until 2009. In Tulsa OK, 2009, he was elected Most Worthy Grand Patron General Grand Chapter, serving with Sister Rennie Ofton, Most Worthy Grand Matron, over the 47th Triennium (2009-12) - "The Nature of God's Love Around the World". He received a life membership in the Laurel Chapter #67 and honourary memberships in the Queen Esther Chapter #61, Port Royal Chapter #1, Mayflower Chapter #2, Evangeline Chapter #15, and Blomidon Chapter #68, within the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. In 2010 by Resolution #484, he was recognized by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly for the honour of being elected Most Worthy Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He received honourary memberships in many of the Grand Chapters he visited within North America and memberships in individual Chapters and Associations within the General Grand Chapter jurisdiction, including Harlendale Chapter #750, and Amistad Chapter #1115, in San Antonio, TX. Fred has been instrumental in helping to establish Order of the Eastern Star Chapters in Romania over the past few years, where he received from the National Grand Lodge of Romania the Diploma of Honour in October 2009. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where an Order of the Eastern Star service and Masonic service, followed by a funeral service and reception, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011. Burial will take place in the Berwick Cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory may be made to the following charities: Most Worthy Grand Patrons Special Project, Order of the Eastern Star - George Washington Masonic Memorial, the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
